Play Our New Covers Jukebox

csc When people meet us and ask about a specialty, we're always tempted to say "everything."  But one job request we especially enjoy is to record covers.  We bring in artists to collaborate, and we always try to take the songs somewhere they haven't been before.

Now we've created a quick and easy way to check out some of our highlights - Mates of State doing "Calendar Girl", Andrew Bird doing "Sweet Georgia Brown", Sabina Sciubba of Brazilian Girls doing "Tea for Two", and lots more.

Artist Spotlight: Jennifer O'Connor

csc One of our favorite singer-songwriters, Jennifer O'Connor, releases her second album for Matador Records today, Here With Me. She's been in front of the mic several times at Music for Picture - that's her voice on this Bridgestone spot, part of a campaign using Roseanne Cash's "The Wheel" in many different genres. We asked Jennifer to join us for this featured artist spotlight and asked her a couple of questions. Also, we are giving away two tickets for Jennifer's record release show at Mercury Lounge this Thursday. First one to write back wins!

Wirechoir: What's the strangest tv or film request you've ever had for your music?
Jennifer: I had a song in the horror movie The Strangers recently. That's kind of strange to me. I don't really think of my music as horror movie-esque. I haven't seen the film yet because I'm a scaredy cat.

WC: Is there a movie theme song you wish you recorded?
J: I really like the instrumental theme to St. Elmo's Fire - which I know is terribly cheesy. I also love the music in the movie High Art, by the band Shudder to Think. I'd love to do movie scoring in the future.

WC: What's one of the favorite shows you've played?
J: One of my favorite shows I've played was probably the time my band and I got to open for Silver Jews in St. Louis. David Berman is kind of my idol and that was an unforgettable night.

WC: What's one of the favorites show you've seen?
J: One of the favorite shows I've seen was probably The Replacements in my senior year of high school. That show changed my life.

Radiohead Revisionism

Before Peter embarked on this remix for Radiohead's "Nude", he had a rather circuitous inspiration. Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead multi-instrumentalist and There Will Be Blood composer) recently created an 18-minute orchestral piece "Popcorn Superhet Receiver" as a commission for the BBC. Gershon Kingsley, the early synth pop pioneer, had a hit in 1972 that changed the landscape of pop music with its use of the Moog synthesizer - it was called "Popcorn".

So, imagining that Radiohead was around in the late 1960's making music similar to Kingsley, Peter fashioned his own "Nude" remix as a kind of "Popcorn" mash-up.
